Can We Please, As a Culture, Just Move On?

[Currently Listening To: The Duke Spirit - Cuts Across the Land]

The title of this post is lifted from this XKCD strip - a commentary on the strange male preoccupation with penis size. I've never really understood it myself, but Idunno, maybe that's just because I have a huge cock. Anyway, today the concept of moving on as a culture applies to the media, and the focus of our national attention. Right now, CNN's front page is furiously ejaculating over its much-balyhooed post-jail interview with Paris Fuckbag Hilton. You know, the one Larry King conducted earlier today after scrapping a previously-scheduled interview with Michael Moore about some kinda important shit. I don't know what burning questions Mr. King ended up asking, because I'd rather watch an interview with my balls, but I'm sure it was a rousing hour of highly intellectual banter. You know what? Fuck you, Larry King. I hope you have trouble sleeping tonight because you realize you hit the rock bottom of journalistic integrity when you failed to tell your employers to go fuck themselves if they expected you to pretend to care about anything Paris Hilton has to say. You probably didn't, though - what do you care? It's more ratings, right? It's what people want. I think that makes Larry King and the highly respectable news team at CNN a fine choice for our second semi-occasional Embarrassing New Low Award:

At least someone on TV news had enough of all this (although since MSNBC is featuring that clip instead of being embarrassed by it, it's probably just a marketing ploy to take some wind out of CNN's sails).

The point is that we need to stop. All of us. We, as a culture, are being sedated with bullshit, day in and day out. And like Miss Hilton snorting blow off a toilet seat, it's easy and accessible and it's destroying us, but we can't get enough. In a world as fucked as ours, no one should be talking about Paris fucking Hilton. Not for any reason, ever. We shouldn't be praising her, we shouldn't be making fun of her, we shouldn't be criticizing her or reading about her or watching her shitty amateur porn videos. Not me, not you, and certainly not any entity presenting itself as a "news" organization. There are so many people in this world who are doing important things. There are people doing incredible, world-changing things every day, and you never hear about them. There are people who are doing unimaginably terrible things every day, and you never hear about them. Every day brilliant people are making new scientific discoveries, and creating new inventions. Every day truly evil people people are murdering thousands, and profiting from it. Every day powerful people are making new laws, enacting new policies, all of it affecting the world. Every day regular people are creating entertainment, running companies, teaching children, making sandwiches, and cleaning floors. Billions upon billions of people who are, in some way, positive or negative, contributing to society. Paris Hilton is not one of those people - the only thing unique about her is how astonishingly little she adds to the world. To devote so much of our national discourse to someone so devoid of value, at such a significant time in world history, is a crime - pure and simple.

Rich, powerful people - the one percent of the world's population who control 80 percent of its wealth - they love Paris Hilton. Dick Cheney and his big man-sized safe of evil secrets love Paris Hilton. They love Paris Hilton, and American Idol, and Britney and Lindsay and OJ and the Superbowl, and any of the other million things that our flaccid media uses to keep the fleeting national attention span distracted with issues of ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING SIGNIFICANCE WHATSOEVER. To keep us content, complacent, uninformed, and unmotivated to change. Al Gore recently wrote a whole book on the subject. In his words:
"We are at a pivotal moment in American democracy. The persistent and sustained reliance on falsehoods as the basis of policy, even in the face of evidence to the contrary, has reached levels that were previously unimaginable. It's too easy and too partisan to simply place the blame on the policies of President George W. Bush. We are all responsible for the decisions our country makes.

Reasoned, focused discourse is vital to our democracy to ensure a well-informed citizenry. But this is difficult in an environment in which we are experiencing a new pattern of serial obsessions that periodically take over the airwaves for weeks at a time--from the O.J. Simpson and Michael Jackson trials to Paris Hilton and Anna Nicole Smith."

Gore perhaps doesn't chide the American public quite enough for their role in all this, saying that reason is "under assault by forces using sophisticated techniques such as propaganda, psychology, and electronic mass media." That's true, but it starts with us, as a society. As the people who consume this crap. It exists because we keep eating it up. We have to start by not giving one tenth of a shit what Paris Hilton has to say about anything - and even if you're talking about how much she sucks or laughing at her, you're still part of the problem, because you're still keeping the discourse going. Hell, I'm part of the problem by even writing this blog entry, but I'm vowing, right now, that even to make a statement, I will never talk about Paris Hilton ever again. I will never read about her, write about her, or allow myself to be exposed to anything relating to her whatsoever, and I suggest you do the same. Since no one's ready to start a revolution yet, we can at least take our own baby steps. Next time you see Paris on TV, change the channel. Next time you encounter a news article or a blog post about her, just move right along. When you inevitably see the Larry King interview featured on YouTube, resist the urge to click. Next time someone at the water cooler says "did you see what Paris Hilton did?" ask them if they know who their senators are. Don't even lecture them, just change the subject. Don't even talk about people talking about her too much. Don't even talk about not talking about Paris Hilton. Let's all, as a culture, just move on. But before you give your brain a Paris colonic, contact CNN and tell them that you're never, ever going to watch their network again, because you're tired of shallow entertainment masquerading as news. Tell them if their entire broadcast day was one tenth as insightful as one episode of The Daily Show's fake news broadcast - they'd have a good start. And while you're at it, drop an e-mail to the editors of People Magazine and give them a nice list of all the good things a person could do for the world with $300,000 - $300,000 of course being the amount People agreed to pay for photos of Paris Hilton to accompany a print interview.

Don't get me wrong - I love mindless entertainment and trashy pop culture as much as the next guy. I just finished laughing in jaw-dropped awe at R Kelly's latest masterpiece, a magnificent work of "urban poetry" which quells any fears I might have had that the next installment of Trapped In The Closet would fail to live up to the glory of the original. But when so much utterly inconsequential bullshit starts to become what America considers "news" that the entire national consciousness consistently ignores giant, glaring problems... well, we have a giant, glaring problem - and rich hotel heiresses being forced to serve jail time starts to seem less like sweet vindication and more like a symptom of a culture gone terribly awry.

Amen, sir. One wonders how low we, as a country, can sink. It's pretty bad when even O.J. Simpson criticizes how out-of-hand it's become.

Paris Hilton represents an entire generation filled with people clamoring to get their 15 minutes for doing absolutely nothing. Paris is their role model. They watch her because they want to BE her. She represents the hope that any brainless twat can become famous world-wide by just showing up and looking good. Exhibit A: MySpace.

You have no idea how much I've wanted to hear someone say this. I get so sick of people on my friends list posting shit like "har har Paris goes to jail!". Yeah, okay good, but can you please not care about it so much like everyone else?

Many, many thanks for this.

I fight the battle with my manager daily to ignore and not feature anything related to people and stories like this, and I don't win nearly as often as I'd like.

This will help renew my energy to keep fighting.

Rob,
No, as a culture we won't move on. Unfortunately, not all people are informed, educated citizens. On US network news stations there has been a decline in international news from 45% to 13%, which clearly shows most Americans are not & don't care to be informed. For most Americans it's much more comfortable to wallow in vapid "news" like Hilton's imprisonment than to pay attention to the up coming presidential elections or what the senate has done with the immigration bill, etc. Pop-culture is an opiate for the masses (thank you Marx) and it's divergence at its finest.
Pop-culture in America carries connotations of inferiority, a second best culture for those unable to understand (let alone appreciate) real culture.

Great post, Rob. Sadly, there are too few people who agree with you, and what's worse is that the current corporate and business model in the US basically has it so real journalism and independent media outlets fail, and "infotainment" or whatever the fuck they want to call it succeeds. And it's not just Paris.

Say what you want about Steve Irwin, but we did not need four weeks of headline articles about his impalement. Three days after his death, everyone was still running that story, but at the same time, Tony Blair had made the first official announcement of his intent to resign from office, and the results of Mexico's presidential election were in. But those got buried for a prick who got felled by a petting zoo critter. Prominent? Sure. Worthy of that much coverage? Hell no.

TV "news" is the worst, because they have the time limits, ratings, etc. to factor in. So there really isn't any news on TV anymore. I was taught in my journalism classes that one half-hour of TV news has as much information as one page of a newspaper, but I think that these days, that's being awfully generous. Maybe an article and a half, at best.

I'd like to suggest a book to you - 'If It Bleeds, It Leads. An Anatomy of Television News.' By Mathew R. Kerbel. It's for a high school audience, but I found it to be relevant and insightful for an advanced level electronic media course.

I'm trying to do my part by only working for independent newspapers (thankfully, Florida has a few, and they're some of the most successful in the country) and by at least writing editorials and opinion columns about this. But when everyone just wants gossip, and your boss is telling you to ditch the article on (important topic) in favor of (stupid bullshit,) even the old-school journalists can't do much, unfortunately.

Excellent points, Rob! I just emailed CNN and told them I wouldn't be tuning in anymore. Quite frankly, I didn't need Larry King to interview Ms. Hilton to come to that conclusion. His interview with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono the night before was nothing short of brutal. Halfway through, you could actually see Ringo and Paul exchanging looks that said, "Jesus, is CNN really letting this senile old bastard continue to work? I feel like a bag of douche just sitting next to him!" The questions he asked were ridiculous, he constantly referred to George and John as "departed", "deceased" and "dead" and actually called Ringo "George" at one point. It was embarrassing.
Before I refrain from even mentioning Paris Hilton again, I'd just like to add that I walked in on my own mother watching the interview last night. At that very moment, Hilton appeared to be reading some heartfelt, bullshit letter she had written in jail. She pronounced "transitional" as "transtutional". I laughed heartily, then left the room.

Great post. Our country's obsession with ........... (I can't even bare to type her name) is the most pathetic thing I have ever witnessed. But it won't change. Its sad but true. Even in my own circle of friends I feel as though I am the only one that doesn't watch entertainment news or checks the MTV website ever 3 seconds. I just don't know what we are going to do.
I personally get more excited for every new Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the XKCD comic (you have gotten me addicted FYI)
I have always felt that there was a reason for everything. So ...........'s existence (along with some other people's) really baffles me.

Dear Rob, i try to keep informed about your corner of the world, usually by checking CNN website at least once a day. This morning when i opened the browser something turned in my bowels and it wasn’t because of the granola i had for breakfast....everything you wrote sums up exactly my feelings. I'm in the opposite side of the Atlantic and i’m very shore that if i turn on the news tonight i will be completely sedated by the same trash you people are feed every day plus our very own euro-trash.... The good news is, people sometimes skip their meds, and more and more will be fully awake and realize that a mind is a wonderful thing, not to be wasted on people and events who ad absolutely nothing to it’s growth.

Amen, Rob. Couldn't agree more. The news hasn't been an informative resource in years, save for The Daily Show and maybe the BBC for world news.

I've never understood the stupid fascination this culture has with pseudo-celebs such as Paris Hilton. Their "status" in the world is nothing of their own doing, and that's pretty much what they do -- nothing. Oh, wait. They party all night and shop all day. I guess they do something, but it sure as hell isn't constructive and/or meaningful to the world. They don't deserve an ounce of the attention they get.

And now I'll return to ignoring them as much as possible. :P

(Thunder stolen by other commenters...) I struggle to understand what's so captivating about Paris. Is she "hot"? (I dunno, I'm queer.) Or is it like an accident: gory, but compelling to look at? As for Larry King, he's been throwing softballs forever, and this isn't his lowest... can you say Sylvia Browne? Anyway, glad to be reading your always-clever posts again.

I'm not American, nor do I live in the US, but I do get CNN on my cable system. The first time I ever watched Larry King (As I clicked around, you understand) was when he was interviewing Richard Pryor. To quote: "Hey, Richard. Richard. (Two beats pause) ...What was it like to be on fire?" The term "Ass-Clown" was coined specifically for Larry King. The scary thing to me though is that he's actually touted as the zenith of American journalism. One thing I think you didn't touch upon in your post though Rob, was the effect of this dumbing down of reportage on the rest of the world. It's sad but true: people constantly knock the U.S. but subconciously adopt a lot of U.S. culture simply because it's so pervasive. I think the problems you were highlighting have stretched beyond your borders. The U.S. media is now officially that obnoxious drunk uncle at the wedding you wish would just leave and stop ruining the day for everybody.

You're smart, you use good grammar (a rarity these days, and for some reason something very important to me), and you know how fucking stupid the American society is. Besides that, you lead a very interesting life and you're funny.
But, I completely agree with you here. Along with you, I will never again speak of Paris Hilton, watch anything on the news about her, or any other thing that may somehow be connected with her.

I kind of agree with 'Nico'. As much as I agree with your article Rob, I feel like, by definition the majority always 'win'. And the majority represents the subconscious decisions made by..... well, humans. This can be applied to all aspects of life, (I'm just convinced that someone much smarter than me can no doubt explain this idea a lot better). Religion is a perfect example, but I won't get into that.

With that said, I will always do my bit, (via social means) to open people's eyes to such truths mentioned in this very article.

Really that is the sad truth, back in the day we ahad better things to worry about, but now we lower ourselves to this.. Its sad, I agree with you all, im not lowing the bloggers. I am American, im joining the armed forec blah blah who cares but yeah.. Every empire has its lime light so to speak, its golden age. Then it is followed by a decline or fall and sadly I think we have surcome to ours... I give this country lke 80 years if that until we are equals with mexico or like south america.. Fuck... This country used to stand for something now we stand for what?! I used to know but now, I cant seem to find the answer.. I guess paris just brought this all out. Why she is even the target of the media in the first place is a perfect example, who cares about the ignorant little rich girl whos daddy pays for everything. Right?

Try Victor Pelevin's Generation "П". Yours is no news either. As a "cultural effect" you are not much different from P. Hilton. You make people waste their time in cool annihilation of their own life and time. Not that it's your fault, it's just what happens. I'm no exception. I wasted a couple of days looking at nin stuff and today your blog. Stupid me. I've become a "fan" - a member of a faceless group that you pay no attention to and the more we scream the smaller you get as an actual person. It's a two-way destruction.
As for the media that mingles stuff in our heads - you use the same guns, don't you. It's just that you are aiming at "smarter people". Could you, please, try to define "us as a culture" and then point out where we should move on to.
Don't take it personal, I'm just curious to see what rabbits I will hit with those bullets.

Of course we can't MoveOn [reference anyone?]. How will the tabloids stay in business and provide reading entertainment for millions while simultaneously giving me something to stare at in bemused anger for 8 hours a day while at work? Note I never open them, I just am forced to view the covers.

Unfortunately, I would count as one of the uninformed miscreants according to some, due to my policy. My policy is: I do not watch the news. I avoid it. Aggressively. The first time I even heard about the Malibu fire was when someone mentioned they were buying a few toothbrushes and assorted supplies because they were forced to evacuate. I had no clue what they were talking about as I checked out their groceries, but I thought it rude to ask. Maybe they were being stalked or something.

I don't watch the news because 90% is bullshit, it's irrelevant and has no impact on my life. Oh, and I note the double standard we have: The first time most people have heard of Paris is because she was on the internet being a whore. [Scratch that- whores get paid for work. She doesn't work.] And we still stare after her narrow ass as it does the most unbelievably brainless shit ever. I pray to God her father or whoever decides to give the business to someone with an IQ bigger than their shoe size [or does she already have that too?]. By contrast, Vanessa whatever or whatever the fuck her name was from High School Musical [which I find insipid, but...] was 'scandalized' due to a nude photo [I got this from staring at tabloid covers]. So she's no longer in the game, I think. If I ever become famous [I doubt], and I get into a 'scandal', I think I'll probably give an interview to a tabloid just to make fun of their whole lifestyle. They'll call me a bitch, but hey. I don't have to be nice to America. I'm not running for Miss Popularity.

I get all my news from like minded interweb viewers.

The only thing that REALLY GRATES MY NERVES about that waste of genetic material is the fact that she's roughly what the rest of the world seems to think America is made up of. Except she's skinnier. That and she's famous for no reason at all. I've never even been to a fucking Hilton hotel. And now I never, ever will.
